Looking at health through a functional lens means you are looking for the root cause of the symptoms. It comes down to would you rather take a pharmaceutical drug (OTC or prescription) to treat a symptom or symptoms that are caused by the medication, OR look for the root cause of the symptoms? Maybe it is something you are eating? Let's just say for ease that gluten is causing brain fog or achey joints. You could take an ADHD type medication for the fog in hopes that you will get better focus or you could give up gluten. If we're talking about achey joints you could take an anti-inflammatory and risk damaging your liver over time or give up gluten. I GET that. I've been down this road with my daughter. I remember when we learned she needed to go gluten free, and it was suggested to go paleo. I felt like a deer in the headlights!! How am I going to manage that. What will I make to eat? What is there to eat? Oh the questions were endless. It was so overwhelming. I almost felt like giving up. But the alternative was a dangerous drug we could give my daughter to help her emotional outbreaks, her anxiety, and all the other symptoms that were caused by her brain being inflamed. In the end I rather find foods that would or could replace our beloved favorites. YES, I ended up learning to make many of our favorites at that time because so little was available at stores or in restaurants. However over time it became easier and second nature AND more food choices became available in the stores and restaurants.
So my question to you is Would you rather take a drug or multiple drugs to relief your symptoms or look for the root cause of those symptoms. I will be offering free 30 minute getting to know you appointments for the month of April. Visit my survey here.
